What have you been doing during the summer?

Ok, so yes I haven’t been blogging regularly and have been really trying to take the summer easy.
At work however, we have been quite busy working with so many different things. One of these things that gets SUPER busy during the summer is preparing for the new season of the TENBEFORE. (yes I said season). Kim, my new assistant, has made these gorgeous boards that help us make sense of THREE campuses and what happens Ten Minutes before the service starts. The guys have been working hard on updating the brand, making promo’s for upcoming series, writing commercials that lead people to specific ministries, and highlighting some of our worship leaders. After it runs on Sundays it then goes to the web in case people missed it.

We REALLY wanted to take announcements OUT of the service and keep that time to more of a welcome. It is still evolving and changing and by no means perfect. For us though, we want people to lean in and get engaged when it starts.

Click HERE and here for a sample of what we did in the spring.
Below is what is coming up with the information we have. Don’t think for a second it doesn’t change.

Where do you put your announcements?

Letters to the Next President

Picture 4

We are beginning a new series on June 29th at North Point and it promises to be one that generates a lot of questions. We wanted to get people involved no matter what political view point they had so, we created a website where people can write a letter to the next president no matter WHO it will be. You are not writing to a candidate but to the next president.

Don’t forget to check out the promo. It’s always fun to have Andy involved and we had a great time recreating the White House press room – IN ONE DAY!!!. North American Mission Board is right next door to North Point so we were able to get the flags. We rented the blue drape. Then Matt from the media team sketched out a fun version of the white house but with a little spin. Make sure you see it! Podium is courtesy of Alpharetta Baptist Church.

This series promises to be a good one and we are really excited about it. Stay tuned…

Micah Stevens and EVERYTHING North Point Production

Picture 1-16
Ok, so Hell has frozen over and Micah Stevens has a blog. It has actually been going on for about 2 months now but I think it is known only to a few. So, I am giving a shout out to Micah Stevens. If my team is everything video, creative packaging, product development, pre and post production for North Point’s services, then Micah’s team is EVERYTHING live. Audio, lights, stage design, technical, live video and problem solving multi-campuses. He is a stud, his team is a bunch of studs and he needs to be on your blogroll.
So there!

Getting ready for DRIVE ’08!!!!!

Ok Folks… we’re ready.
For those of you who are going… and I want to hear from each and every one of you, it’s gonna be incredible, fun, crazy, engaging, helpful, and out of this world!!

The whole staff has been working really hard to get ready for the arrival of over 2300 people for Drive.
One of the coolest parts is that we get to have ALL campuses involved with the production instead of meeting on Mondays and Tuesdays and then saying goodbye.
Here are many of the people on the production and media staff from all three campuses…

New Blog from Pace Hartfield at Fellowship

I say new because it looks like it got started in March of this year.
Pace Hartfield is the Worship pastor at Fellowship where he leads the Worship/Media.
He posted an incredible video they did at Christmas using a freakin’ Autodesk’s Smoke and Flame for compositing and 3-D work plus a Sony F900. Oh – My – WORD!
Anyways – I am sure he will have lots to offer on his blog and I look forward to hearing from him.

New Series at North Point (Jeff Henderson Speaking)

Jeff Henderson (Campus Director at Buckhead Church) is speaking at North Point for two weeks. The media team has been challenged with doing something that in my mind is VERY difficult to do and be taken seriously unless done well – to shoot a period piece – Solomon himself. I really like the idea and we have an incredible actor to do a monologue. Jeff has done a wonderful job of setting us up early to figure things out and hash out some ideas.

This is the evite. (Mike from Media layed it out and we worked again with our friend Brian Manley.

Series starts this Sunday. It is gonna be REALLY good.

Easter

You hear it a lot from us guys and gals that work at North Point, Buckhead, and Browns Bridge (Los, Reid, Amber, Tyler, Shove, Elliott, Josh, Dave, Shae, Shane and others) that it is a blessing and an honor to work with such amazing people under incredible leadership. Good Friday and Easter Sunday were no exception.

All three campuses had a unique aspect to them.
All three campuses presented the same message packaged in a different way.

For North Point – we opened the whole service with the following 3 screen extravaganza:
(As you watch the movie – the middle video represents our Center Screen HD and the upper right and left screens represent our IMAGE MAG screens. Things pick up at about 1:27. I couldn’t figure out how to get the white out of QuickTime so please ignore the bottom corners)

Picture 3-5

The whole opener was inspired by Max Lucado’s “No Wonder they Call Him Savior” and Eddie Kirkland had an idea in a creative meeting to focus on the words in a chapter that was dedicated to the Easter story. Mike (our graphic designer) came up with the printed look.

Then Reid (North Point Music guy) walks into my office and says “hey I have been working on something for the opener”.
I was off to the races in creating something that we prayed would begin a journey for the day.

Matt followed by blowing us all away with an incredible Title Package

Picture 4-4
… that again Reid cranked out a score for that was based on an original song Eddie Kirkland and Steve Fee wrote.

Ultimately I really feel like the service was a success not because of three or four videos and great worship but because lives were changed at the end of the service when Andy gave the invitation.

What a week and what a Sunday.
Happy Easter.

TenBefore 3-2-08 for North Point, Buckhead and Browns Bridge

Ok – this post is a doozey so grab a cup of coffee if your interested and get a feel for what three campuses experience right before the services start on a Sunday morning.

Let me start off by giving some credits:

Producer: well… that would be me.
Written & Directed (Kelly segments for all three campuses): Sunny Williams
Shooter for Green Screen: Dave Blakeslee
Green Screen Edit: Dave Blakeslee
Keyed: the guys let me do this.
Composited, Motion Graphics and Final Edit: Matt Gibson (our maximizer)

Before you see the TenBefore’s, read below for a little bit of insight.

Picture 6-2Picture 10

Picture 3-4

Each week the media team needs to export three different versions of the TenBefore. Much of the content is the same but there are specific elements that are different. three Churches – three Kelly intro’s – three logo’s.

Picture 5-1

For this particular week, all three churches are letting people know about “NEXT” an environment for those wishing to take the next step in getting connected. Whether it’s volunteering, finding out where to get plugged in, whatever you are interested in, we want them to not take up a seat but to get INVOLVED and find out what is NEXT.

Picture 9Picture 1-8

So we needed to promote “I Want to be Great” a new four-part series that Clay Scroggins AND Andy were going to preach together. Clay is young, fun and is the High School pastor. Andy is, well, the senior pastor! So we convinced Andy to help us with the promo and I am so glad he did. He has a great sense of humor and pulled it off great. The concept obviously came from a certain Super Bowl ad but it worked perfect because of the series that was coming up. (This promo is in the Buckhead and Browns Bridge TenBefore and not in North Point’s. North Point had already ran it twice and instead did a Kelly VO with graphics.) Tripp and Tyler did great and continue to be a staple of laughs for our pre-service ideas! Tripp (guy on left), Adam, Matt, Ryan, Dave B. did a great job of getting this baby in the can on a tight turnaround with some TOUGH weather conditions and some serious illnesses. While one crew was shooting the golf scene, Dave was setting up in Andy’s office. We had 45 minutes to get Andy’s stuff.
A lot of details on this shoot. The picture in picture on the computer. The wall that needed to fall (thanks matt borbi). Finding a golf course in the dead of winter. Asking IT to give us a computer and CAMERA we could total. Good times.
I got to put the graphic together at the end and added the “falling” logo for a little fun. Mike (our graphic designer) worked really hard with Brian Manley to come up with this look. HUGE TEAM EFFORT. These are my favorite successes.

Picture 4-3Picture 8

Picture 11

We started a new segment called “unplugged” and really it’s a way for our attenders to get to know our worship leaders in a fun and relate-able way. The cool thing about this is that all three campuses got involved. North Point (Dave and Tripp) shot and edited Kristian Stanfill’s video. Kaye at Buckhead shot and edited Chrystina Fincher’s video and Ryan Shove and Shae got to shoot Casey Darnell’s video. We know that there are a TON of ways to do this kind of video. Kaye originally came up with the Cribs type feel so we modeled after it however kept it a little bit “lower toned”. Our goal was to not make it CRIBS “look at me” but more of a get to know me segment as if you were invited over to the house. Browns Bridge went with a completely different route and came up with a powerful piece on Casey. I love Ryan’s set design. Matt from media worked his magic on the branding side of things.

Picture 7-1
Buckhead added a little segment called the “Just Tell Booth”. In early January we did a series called “Just Ask”. Buckhead decided to make a “confessional booth” for people who were invited to church by a friend, co-worker, family member, etc.. and to talk into a camera and tell their story of how someone “asked” them to church. I love this idea and I love that we were able to put it into the TenBefore that is specific to Buckhead.

Picture 2-6

Lastly – all three campuses took the opportunity to make people aware of one of our partnerships. This time we highlighted Southside Church in Peachtree City. I believe Joe Wiggleston took a ton of B-Roll for our guys to put together. Kelly did great with walking us through this campus. I can’t say enough about Kelly and the way she makes this look easy. Sunny Williams does an amazing job of writing these scripts and walking and directing Kelly during the shoots. Again, I am spoiled to work with incredible people.

Please let me know if you have any questions at all or just make a general comment. Believe it or not, I hate to write, but love to read.
Brad

Unleash Conference – we’re going!

Unleash Web Resources

So I am taking the media guys (Dave, Mike, Adam, Tripp, Matt, and Ryan) on a road trip and we are going to Unleash!
I have seen some blogs about it and quite frankly I am just looking forward to hanging out with the media team, going to a different church and seeing, hearing and meeting some different people. We are heading up Wednesday night, gettin’ some dinner, maybe a movie and then looking forward to a great day at Newspring. Last conference I went to was the Willow arts conference in 2006.
Who of you out there am I gonna get to meet!?

NORTH POINT and YOUTUBE!!!!!

Ok People – I am sooooo stoked.
If you have never heard Andy Stanley talk and only have about 10-20 minutes – now’s your chance.
North Point Ministries now has a channel on youTube.

The reason why North Point is putting specific content on YouTube is for everybody and anybody to have access to some powerful truths on specific topics that EVERYONE will identify with. Most of the content is 10-20 minutes long. If you are a Christian and you have a friend that is struggling with marriage, finances, doubt and disbelief, going down the wrong path or life is just doing a once over – please, please, please look through these messages and find one that you think will help that individual. If you are someone who just enjoys listening and watching YouTube content, then please check out North Point’s page. Life is full of too many lies that are soooo easily concealed.

This content is not meant to “show off” North Point or to get people in our doors. It is meant as a tool and a resource for people to link too or link others too that might spark some great conversations about the topic or issues that are being shared. This library will only grow and it is intentional. (“It’s Personal” content is the full messages for the time being). Please listen for yourselves and then pass them along.
Link to a message – put it on your blog – subscribe to the channel – use it however you want.

Picture 1-2
Picture 5
On the media/techy side of things..
My guys worked really hard on getting the content up and designing the look of the page. (yes it’s YouTube’s template limitations so we were limited.)

The shorter clips of Andy are actually the same clips from our “Group Curriculum” DVD’s. Each of our DVD’s have the full messages on them as well as shorter clips (we cut in and out of original message) for group discussion. Then questions come up on your TV and wallah… “discuss”!!
I really want to know what you think.

TenBefore January #2 – Video Confessional

This is the second Ten Before for the year and I really think we are off to a great start. We ran this last week as well and before that we had the week off (ice- that didn’t happen) and it was a HUGE blessing to get caught up on so much.
To see the latest version – Click HERE.
Here is the rundown:

Picture 2-3
WAUMBA LAND – Kelly is doing a great job as always and Sunny Williams is rockin and rollin as the producer of Kelly’s segments. She deserves a medal for keeping up with three campuses schedules. We decided at the beginning of the year that we were not going to wait for promo requests to highlight a certain ministry, especially those that are going on during Sunday morning. In the beginning of January we talked about “Next”, now we are talking about “Waumba Land”. For us it gives the first time person or 5 time attender information about what is available. In the coming months, we will continue this as we go up in age.
Picture 3-2
GLOBAL X – Since August, I have made it my mission to focus on ONE concept to promote throughout the year for each ministry. We can change the story and execution each time but let’s get a concept and run with it. (concept – story – execution). For missions, our concept was to interview both sides of the benefits of going on a short terms trip. The person that went, and the person from the country who received the help. We would ask them the same 5 questions and cut between them. For this first stab, we ended up showing just the person that went. We got footage from our friends in the Philippines however we couldn’t get it to work in the short time we had. Dave did some great editing and Matt handled graphics. I really want to see if the two person concept will work. We’ll see.

Picture 4-2
MARRIEDLIFE – I LOVE this concept. I think this campaign is going to grow for MarriedLife. I really want to now if you all get it.
There is always this tension between promoting an event and showing footage from it (which is like taking a picture of Rome and telling everybody how great it is – it’s just not the same) or creating a buzz about the event or even the ministry. So for MarriedLife, we decided to promote the ministry and then tag it at the end with the EVENT info. The concept of the ministry promo being “Every marriage deserves more.”
Picture 5
This is the promo for “Text” we first promoted this last week. Mike bailed me out on this. I told Mike on a Thursday I needed help with the promo and what I envisioned for it. He killed it and read my mind. ESPECIALLY for getting it done on a Friday in 5 hours.
Picture 6
One of the great things about the TenBefore is that we can use Kelly to highlight any ministry and like Waumba land we are really trying to be intentional about Starting Point twice a month. We really think this is a great place for people to take that next step to a relationship with Christ.

Love to know your thoughts…

Ten Things I learned from Matchbox 20, Alanis, and Mutemath

10. Good singers are good singers. Rob Tomas and Alanis are freaking good singers.

9. Anything can happen live anywhere!! (Video screens not working, people rushing the stage). Things Happen!

8. Even at the best concerts, people start milling or walking out when there is a lull. Think of the people that start to walk out of your church as the closing song begins. (For North Point and campuses – people like to get to their cars early) It happened to all three of the bands.

7. If you use video screens for your backdrop of your service….

– USE SOLID COLORS and change them up. Very powerful with lights.

6. If you use video screens for your backdrop of your service….

– Incorporate Black. so the screens don’t get diluted with something ALWAYS showing. Black (nothing on the screens) is a very POWERFUL tool so you can make a punch when you want EVERYTHING in – (say on a Chorus).

5. People do not like to stand behind me in a concert.

4. Bison Burger is GOOD.

3. Image Mag is a GOOD THING.

2. White spandex does not work on ANYBODY! Even from 100 yards out!

1. No matter how great your musicians are – if they are going through the funnel of a BAD AUDIO MIX then they sound mediocre, bland and boring. Mutemath and Alanis’s band were short changed because of HORRIBLE mixes. Brutal. It’s good Alanis had some hits that we could hold onto. She was amazing. Matchbox 20 sounded incredible!

North Point Music Guy

So I haven’t “pimped” anybody’s blog since I started this addiction as I feel I am not really worthy of enough experience to “pimp out”. But i did want to give a shout to a BRAND NEW BLOGGER named Reid Greven. Reid is the associate music director at North Point and pretty much handles the band members. When I say handles, I mean taming. I not only get to work with Reid every day but he is also a member of the unofficial North Point Fantasy football league (purely entertainment) which I head up.
Reid’s from Canada so cut him some slack. He is amazingly talented and loves God. If you have anything to do with music in your church, put Reid in your rotation of blogs to visit.

Renewed Vision (Propresenter) gets nods at Macworld

Renewedvision

Macrumors did an article on my buddy Brad Weston (on left) and his company Renewed Vision. They were out at MacWorld in San Francisco (I wonder if my dad saw them). I worked for Brad at a company called Halo where he basically taught me everything I know about technology, authoring and creating video deliverables. He is a volunteer at North Point and our other partnership churches. I can’t say enough about the impact Brad has had at North Point and a ton of other churches around the country. The direction of my life changed after working with Brad and the guys.
Give a shout if you have used propresenter or any other of renewed Vision’s products.

***Update*** Greg (right in picture) just sent me these links from Apple. I am stoked these guys are getting some great scenery on Apple’s web. If you haven’t used their stuff download the demo right from Apple’s site at the links below.
Check this out or this out. Congratulations guys.

Media Team Changes

Img-0040-1-Tm

So Carlos made his first employee steal 😉 of his time here at NPM. Dustin from my team will now be serving at Buckhead Church as the audio director for SPD (service programming department). Dustin was our studio director with media which meant he was responsible for anything audio when it came to videos, podcasts, voice overs, audio recordings, Sunday morning live capturing and remixing… you name it and he’s done it. Now he will be in charge of anything audio for Buckhead Church and their worship servies. To be fair, Dustin is actually going back to the position in which WE at North Point stole him from.

Dustin will be missed tremendously. He has the ability to lead up and has influenced me in so many ways. Buckhead has some great leaders over there and their reach is long. I am excited for Dustin to get back into live mixing on a full time basis and he will be tremendously missed.

January and the TenBefore

We shot on Tuesday (Dec. 17th Kelly’s segments for the first two weeks of January for TenBefore. We always take off December and the summer time to catch up on things and allow our team AND the audience a little break. I took a few shots of Kelly (she gave me a little wave) as well as Dave (media team) and Sunny (she produces Kelly’s segments and just overall ROCKS!). Sunny has one of the toughest jobs keeping all of Kelly’s content in sync for which campus she is talking too. This year Kelly will be talking a lot more to people who are attending the first time and pointing them to the different environments on campus that they might not know is available. We are also trying to figure out a winter theme.

Kelly 10B4-1Kelly 10B42-1
We shoot in the KidStuf Theater and Dave is the master now of getting a GREAT setup for a great looking TenBefore. If his part doesn’t happen well, then it effects EVERYTHING down the line. If you want a great key, start with a good set and great lighting. He also captures the footage and edits the segments together then passes it to me and I key all the green out and give it to Matt who does his magic and throws it to the Final Cut timeline for the final version. This last fall we decided to go with more templated pieces for easier compositing (Kelly’s Name – Maps – Intro – etc..) It’s not as organic from week to week but it does speed things up a bunch. If you want to see one of the earlier ones from November click here.

“It’s Personal” Part 3 (Meghan Coffee)

Oh my word this series has been more powerful than we could have ever imagined.
Andy has done an amazing job walking those who are “thinking” about taking that next step towards a relationship with Christ and pushing them to KNOW God before they UNDERSTAND God.

This particular title package is the story of Meghan Coffee. I don’t want to ruin anything but this girl has got a story. I loved meeting her and was so impressed by her attitude and flexibility with what we were asking her to do.

Meghan-1

Here is a little bit of the VIDEO Confessional:

Jon Acuff again took and edited all three stories and continued the theme for “It’s Personal”. Meghan turned in her story and it was amazing. Her writing style was so unique and I thought Jon did a great job of keeping her authenticity.

We brought Meghan in to do her voice over the same day we did the photo shoot at the graveyard. Before she left we had her write her WHOLE story down on white paper with the paper turned landscape to better represent the 16×9 screen it was going to play on. Everything you see on this video is her handwriting and her voice.

Meghan’s story got pushed up a week because of the timing of both – when we wanted to play a Sarah Groves song and her availability to play it. That put us in a little bit of a bind. Mike (from Media) took this one and OWNED it. Mike shot all the pictures at the graveyard and Dave B. (from Media) shot live footage for backup. Mike then continued to do all the motion graphics.

Mike surprised all of us when he took all the photo’s – put them in iPhoto and printed out a contact sheet. He then cut all the pictures up and made a storyboard before he ever got into After Effects. We were able to go over all the pictures together, move things around, dialogue and then make final decisions. (Storyboards are great on white paper after you draw them, but to put them on a nice black canvas, cut the images/sketches out and move things around, it allows for a whole lot of decision making to happen before you even start shooting or editing. I am sure most everybody does this, but I think churches (not all) tend to skip over a lot of this process for multiple reasons and it usually has to do with time. Funny thing is, in our experience, time is saved when this process is applied.)

One of the best decisions we made was to actually add color to a couple of the pictures. It was just the right touch that separated this piece from the first, while still keeping the overall look. You’ll see why we did it.
I thought originally we were going to use a different song for this piece than Chris’s but the music is so good we decided to keep it for all three stories (Lead me to the Cross – Hillsong). Again, we played this song live one Sunday morning and Dustin (from media)remixed it and took the lead vocals out.

I am sure I forgot something so please feel free to ask any questions. Media guys, if I forgot something, feel free to comment.

Here is the final that we showed. CLICK HERE

When was the last time you sat in the 5th row of your church service?

Normally I sit middle back in either the East or the West auditorium at North Point. This last Sunday I sat in the front section, 5th row from the front. What a completely different experience.

Loved it.

When was the last time you experienced church that close? Better yet, when was the last time you experienced church through the eyes of a friend that had never been?

North Point was INCREDIBLE this morning!!

Ok so Part 3 of “It’s Personal” was amazing. The whole service, top to bottom was great. We did little drummer boy opening (thanks Lifechurch and Trent Austin) after a couple of preservice Christmas tunes. Instead of having two drummers on stage we had a drummer in the East Auditorium and the drummer on the west. It was crazy and fun!
The title package with Meghan was AMAZING!! I will try to post that tomorrow. Then to everyone’s surprise, meghan came out and sang at the end and oh my lord that girl can sing. Sitting behind the keyboard she killed it.

Today is inmy top two favorite services. #1 Canvas part 4. #2 TODAY.
Andy invited people to take a step out in faith to follow Christ.
Next week’s is Scott’s story. Incredible.

It’s Personal (new Series)

Its Personal Pt1

Last week we started a new series called “It’s Personal” and this week the title package is a four minute, unique story told from the perspective of Chris Ames (see below), a guy who became an atheist after believing God didn’t exist. This whole series is about the barriers people believe are in their way and choose to not take that next step. Andy is going to invite people to take that step of faith and invite Christ into their lives. Through the 4 part series we will be telling 3 stories of individuals who wrestled with God.
Hope to see ya there.

Today (Life Lessons over lunch shoot and Designing the new Media offices)

Today was one of those days that I didn’t see half my team because of a video shoot at a secret location (down the road at NP’s other offices)(not really secret). Tripp and Dave led the charge for a LLOL video – thats fancy talk for “Life Lessons over Lunch”. This ministry utilizes the DVD’s that North Point creates so business leaders can play them during a lunch that he/she provides food for. Totally voluntary and reaelly effective. I absolutely LOVE the script and I think will speak to so many people that are trying to have an impact on the lives of those at work but will not step foot into a church.
I also spent a ton of time talking through the future plans for the new media offices. I am soooooooo dang proud of my team and how hard they work. Whenever you are dealing with media and print – it’s not just that you are getting it done but also realizing it’s going to get judged and criticized and critiqued every week. I am glad I am surrounded by people I trust, otherwise this job would be very frustrating. Knowing that my team and the other campuses have great hearts and great eyes for quality, criticism becomes a hot commodity that pushes you to be better.
